Celestial Bodies: Sculpture by Karen LaMonte
Celestial Bodies is a major retrospective that features 60 of Karen LaMonte's sculptures, many never shown publicly before. In addition to focusing on familiar bodies of work - like the Nocturnes dresses and Floating World kimonos - the exhibition includes new cloud sculptures, historic works on paper, and early bas-relief draperies not seen in nearly two decades. In one particularly striking installation, two of LaMonte's life-size Nocturnes are displayed in front of Jackson Pollock's Number 2, 1949, creating a fascinating juxtaposition between the dress sculptures' haunting realism and Pollock's vibrant abstractions.
